The Pilates Method of Body Conditioning, once called “Contrology”, is a system of exercise developed by Joseph H. Pilates in the early 1900’s. Brought to America in 1926, this method quickly gained recognition as more than a workout. Referred to as “corrective exercise”, Pilates incorporates the body, mind and spirit in the pursuit of total health and wellness.
Pilates works the whole body, rather than its parts. Directed by the mind, Pilates develops better posture and alignment of the spine, a balance of strength and flexibility within the muscles, improved circulation, a clear and focused mind, as well as a deeper awareness and understanding of the body as a whole.
“Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. Our interpretation of physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure.” -Joseph Pilates
